Rowe was a safe tenacious half back. He played very close and had plenty of pace as well as being a good kick. Not a high mark, but that didn't hamper his effectiveness and he learned how to combat taller centre half-forwards. He had originally wanted to play with Melbourne but was residentially tied to Richmond. Rowe soon made a mark in defence with his judgement and anticipation.
