A tough and tremdously determined utility, Dean made life very difficult for resting rovers when he played in back pocket. He worked his way into the senior side from Fourths and became one of the finest defenders of his era. Dean was Richmond skipper from 1968-71 and led the Tigers to the 1969 premiership. He also played in the 1967 Richmond premiership side. Dean, who also could play on the forward line or even rover, was the master of playing for a free kick, especially close to goal.
