A brilliant talented footballer who started his career on the wing after being recruited from Kyabram. He was subject of clearance dispute with North Melbourne, but the Tigers won his services and Clay did not let them down. The strong marking, long kicking Clay, a Victorian representative later becoming a supurb defender. He played in the 1967, 1969 and 1973-74 Tiger premiership sides and later coached Prahan before having a spell as Richmond chairman of selectors in the 80's.
