Daffy was described by Mick Malthouse in 1996 as the best medium
sized half-forward in the league. Drafted in 1990 from North Gambier
it wasn't until 1995 that he established a regular senior position, but
then he lifted to become a handy goalkicker who could make
something out of most situations. When in top form he had the ability
to ignite Richmond. In 1999 he was used as an on-baller and was a
prolific kick-winner. He had won the best and fairest in 1998 and when
he, Richardson and Campbell were all signed to extended, sizeable
contracts it attracted plenty of media coverage and there was a widely
held perception that the top bracket of Richmond players had too much
say in club's direction. He was unable to capture his best form in 2000
and along the way was suspended for an off-field incident. In 2001 he
was plagued by injury and lost his place late in the year. Daffy came
back for the semi-final and when he came off the bench made a big
impression in a crucial contest, but he injured himself in the process.
His time at Richmond came to an end after the 2001 season. He had
almost crossed to Hawthorn a year earlier, but had endured a frustrating
season with on-going knee problems. He was on highly paid contract at
Richmond but it was said he would receive less in two years at Sydney
than he would have for one year at Richmond.
