A
long-kicking winger from Droiun, he was the first of the Ablett
brothers to establish himself as a VFL star. He was one of the fastest
players in the league during his era, winning footballers' sprint
three years in a row. A knee injury in his first season at senior level
held him back temporarily, but upon his return he made an immediate
impact, intially as a long-kicking centreman, but then as a free
flowing winger. He had great resilience in his game and even when he
was down for a while he could come back strongly and get on top. He
played in Hawthorn's 1976 and 1978 premiership sides. He played a
game for the Victorian B side against Queensland in 1980. He won
his clearance to Richmond on appeal after a protracted dispute, but
knee and hamstring injuries restricted his appearances. Trying to trim
their budget, the Tigers traded him to St Kilda.
