Michael Grinter handcrafts his
beautiful wooden flutes for players of Irish and Classical music. He
has travelled the world measuring instruments in collections, playing
old flutes and talking to flute players. |
He has come to flute making
not only through his playing and love of Irish music, but also
through his unique talent and experience as a maker of recorders.
His instruments are sought by leading players around the world,
played by professionals and amateurs alike, and are recognised as
among the finest to be made. Fifteen years of handcrafting
instruments has generated an enviable reputation for the Grinter
mark.

on old instruments by makers such as Rudall and Rose. They follow closely the craftsmanship, detail and tone of the
originals. Michael strives for the rich and compelling sound achieved by the old makers. His flutes are powerful
but mellow, and while they were originally designed to be played in a concert hall, they are also widely favoured by
players of Irish music. The flutes are available in a number of designs and variations. All come
with an adjustable cork and tuning slide. All mounts and keys are of sterling silver.
At present all flutes are based on an original Rudall and Rose instrument, but further models such as the Pratten system are under development. The instruments are made from painstakingly selected timber, and a variety of woods are available to choose from, including African Blackwood ( the most favoured), Cocobolo, English Boxwood and Australian Mulga. | There is a number of variations of key work. A basic folk flute with no keys is offered
as well as six or eight keyed models. Variations on these standard models are available on request. An acanthus leaf pattern model with highly ornate key work and rings is also available. Silver saddles on key blocks can be fitted as an optional extra.

All keyed flutes are supplied in a handcrafted wooden box. Keyless flutes are supplied in an
attractive padded roll-up bag.
